The top quark

As its name states, the top quark is a quark. Quarks are one of the fundamental building blocks of which the entire universe is constructed. Scientists know of six different quarks, although only two of them (the up and down quarks) are found inside the protons and neutrons at the center of atoms. The other four quarks (strange, charm, bottom and top) are all unstable and decay in fractions of a second.

Fourth-generation particles

Scientists have built a well-tested model of the building blocks of the universe. But experiments at the Large Hadron Collider could reveal additional types of subatomic particles that make up our world.

Everything we see – from coffee cups to computers to human beings – is made up of just three basic particles: two types of quarks that make up the nucleus of an atom and an electron that orbits that nucleus.
