CERN and EUROVISION unite to attract “tweens” to science

Geneva, 11 July 2013. CERN1 and EUROVISION2 are awarding grants to two production companies to develop multiplatform media proposals to spark the scientific curiosity of “tweens” – children aged eight to twelve.

“Children are the most remarkable example of curiosity,” said Sergio Bertolucci, CERN’s Director of Research and Computing. “We should not limit this curiosity, but develop it”.

CERN opens its doors to the world

Geneva, 4 July 2013. From 27 to 30 September 2013, CERN1 is putting on a long weekend of events and activities as a way of sharing its research and discoveries with its community and the wider public.

On Saturday, 28 and Sunday, 29 September, CERN will open up its installations to the general public. With the slogan “Our Universe is Yours”, these two Open Days will put the spotlight on CERN's discoveries and experiments, as well as the fantastic machines that lead to these discoveries.

CERN’s ISOLTRAP reveals new magic in the atomic nucleus

Geneva, 19 June 2013. The ISOLTRAP collaboration1 has measured the mass of exotic calcium nuclei using a new instrument installed at the ISOLDE facility at CERN2. The measurements, published on 20 June in the journal Nature, clearly establish a new “magic number” related to the stability of this exotic species. The results cast light on how nuclei can be described in terms of the fundamental strong force.

CERN and the Wigner Research Centre for Physics inaugurate CERN data centre’s extension in Budapest, Hungary

Geneva 13 June 2013. CERN1 and the Wigner Research Centre for Physics2 today inaugurated the Hungarian data centre in Budapest, marking the completion of the facility hosting the extension for CERN computing resources. About 500 servers, 20,000 computing cores, and 5.5 Petabytes of storage are already operational at the site. The dedicated and redundant 100 Gbit/s circuits connecting the two sites are functional since February 2013 and are among the first transnational links at this distance.

CERN and Ars Electronica launch open call for the third Prix Ars Electronica Collide@CERN

Geneva/Linz, 3 June 2013. CERN1 and Ars Electronica2 today launch an open call for artists working in the digital domain to apply for the third Prix Ars Electronica Collide @ CERN3. The winner will receive a fully funded residency at CERN and Ars Electronica to create new dimensions in their artistic practice by encounters with the world of science. This is the third year of the collaboration between CERN and Ars Electronica.

Physicists at CERN measure a fundamental property of the rarest element on Earth

An international team of physicists at the radioactive-beam facility ISOLDE at CERN1 have for the first time measured the ionization potential of the rare radioactive element astatine2.

The value for astatine, published today in the journal Nature Communications, could help chemists to develop applications for the element in radiotherapy, and will serve as a benchmark for theories that predict the structure of super-heavy elements.
