Poland at CERN
On 17 October 2000, the second Polish industrial and technological exhibition
opens at CERN*. The first one was held five years ago and nine of the
companies that were present then have come back again this year. Six of
those companies were awarded contracts with CERN in 1995. Three Polish
officials were present at the Opening Ceremony today: Mrs Malgorzata Kozlowska,
Under-secretary of State in the State Committee for Scientific Research,
Mr Henryk Ogryczak, Under-secretary of State in Ministry of Economy and
Prof. Jerzy Niewodniczanski, President of National Atomic Energy Agency.
Professor Luciano Maiani welcomed the Polish delegation to CERN and stressed
the important contribution of Polish scientists and industrialists to
the work of the laboratory.
The exhibition offers Polish companies the opportunity to establish professional
contacts with CERN. Nineteen companies will present their latest technology
in the fields of cryogenics and vacuum technologies, electric power and
power electronics, heavy mechanical components, small and precision-machined
mechanical components, instrumentation, electrical and mechanical, electronics
and software, power-control and fibre optic cables.
For four days in October part of CERN will become Poland. The CERN staff
will have the opportunity to absorb Polish culture too, as the industrial
exhibition is accompanied by a Print and Drawings exhibition of the works
of Ryszard Otreba, a piano concert by the Duo of Justyna Galant and Filip
Wojciechowski, and a projection of three films: `Tango` with a 1982 Oscar
for Best Animated Film, `Love Stories` with a 1997 FIPRESCI Award in Venice,
and `Amateur` with a 1980 Grand Prix at the Chicago Film Festival.
After celebrating the shutdown of the 11-year LEP accelerator CERN is
now focusing on LHC, a new particle collider which is scheduled to start
running in 2005. CERN will develop the most sophisticated technology in
order to construct LHC and this is a good opportunity for Polish companies
to display their potential and bid for CERN tenders.
